09/09/2023 Bikepacking Spain Day 32 : Time to Take a Break!

Ah, we are so clever. Let's sleep on top of the mountain to avoid the heat and humidity. Too bad that hasn't been working. Every day there is an inversion layer where the cool (but humid) air settles in the valleys. It's probably drier up top - but still relatively warm too. This weather is so weird. Anyway, the other problem was that lightning storms passed over a few times while we were under the tent on the mountain. Janet slept through them, but I stayed awake until they abated at 2:30 am. The parts of the tent were being thrashed by the wind, making lots of noise. --

We decided that since we had ridden 11 days without a rest, it would be a good time to stop and ground ourselves a bit. I actually don't like taking days off because it wreaks havoc on my diabetes (insulin doses climb to triple or more than what I use on back-to-back ride days). This causes some painful roller coaster glucose swings that are very depressing - and you don't know when it's going to hit you. --

Another big reason for a rest is because we have lots of bug bites - in the "sensitive areas". Basically anywhere that gets sweaty and is under clothing. We never saw the bugs. We have been living a little "rough" sleeping in mangers and places where animals have been. It's probably not the healthiest lifestyle unless you're a super-hippie who communes with all forms of life. Sleeping in a clean apartment will give us a little time to heal the scars from the invisible pests. --
