Backpacking is the outdoor recreation of carrying gear on one’s back, while hiking for more than a day. It is often but not always an extended journey, and may or may not involve camping outdoors.

Prior to the trip, I believe I had the notion that the Sierra High Route had better scenery than the JMT.  The spectacles along the JMT were just as fantastic (and sometime better) than the high route.  In this picture, for example, the high route follows the base of Mt Ritter / Banner.  Unlike the SHR, the view from the JMT lets you take in Garnet Lake with the mountains behind... spectacular! 2
